They
Might BeAre Giants… Of The Baseball World
“
Well, if I’m going to make it, I’d like it to be while I’m alive,” Rose told the newspaper. “But I also know it’s out of my hands. I think I’ve finally done what (the late baseball commissioner) Bart Giamatti said I needed to do and that is reconfigure my life. At the time, I didn’t know what he meant. I know now. It wasn’t just watching out who I was hanging around with, and stopping the illegal gambling. It was to look in the mirror, take responsibility for my actions, be a man. It took me a long time. I’ve got a hard head.
Added Rose: “I would hope that I’d get a second chance. Don’t wait till I’m dead. The Hall of Fame is for family and friends. I’d like to get up there in front of them.

‘Best Game Ever’ Broadcast Found in Bing Crosby’s Wine Cellar
How a near pristine, black-and-white reel of the entire television broadcast of the deciding game of the 1960 World Series — long believed to be lost forever — came to rest in the dry and cool wine cellar of Bing Crosby’s home near San Francisco is not a mystery to those who knew him.
Crosby loved baseball, but as a part owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates he was too nervous to watch the Series against the Yankees, so he and his wife went to Paris, where they listened by radio.
“He said, ‘I can’t stay in the country,’ ” his widow, Kathryn Crosby, said. “ ‘I’ll jinx everybody.’ ”
He knew he would want to watch the game later — if his Pirates won — so he hired a company to record Game 7 by kinescope, an early relative of the DVR, filming off a television monitor. The five-reel set, found in December in Crosby’s home, is the only known complete copy of the game, in which Pirates second baseman Bill Mazeroski hit a game-ending home run to beat the Yankees, 10-9. It is considered one of the greatest games ever played.

“Riding New York City’s Times Square Shuttle subway cars will be a lot more interesting next month.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says it will be airing video clips from Major League Baseball broadcasts on the shuttle that runs between Times Square and Grand Central Terminal.
The campaign is an effort by the MTA to raise its advertising revenue. The cable network TBS is paying to air the highlights of the previous day’s playoff games to promote its coverage of the playoffs.”

Fewer Empty Seats May Mean More Runs
Neither team [San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Rays] is filling more than 65% of its seats this season despite playing well, and a new study says this could already have cost them several wins apiece. Erin Smith, a Ph.D. candidate at NYU’s Stern School of Business, co-wrote a paper that shows a 48% increase in a team’s attendance makes that team score an extra run every game.
…Ms. Smith’s study, which was published this year in the Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports, used a regression model to account for things like team ability, stadium size and weather. By doing this, she showed that increased attendance does, in fact, help teams play well, instead of this simply being a matter of good teams drawing more fans.

The Beck Jinx Continues, Cards have lost 5 straight since Pujlos and LaRussa spoke at Beckapalooza

“If I could have spoken to Albert Pujols on Saturday, I would have asked him to enter the masses and start asking some questions. In July, Pujols was asked about controversial Arizona immigration law 1070. He said, ” I’m opposed to it. How are you going tell me that, being Hispanic, if you stop me and I don’t have my ID, you’re going to arrest me? That can’t be.” So what happened, Albert? You only disagree with the supporters of this law when you’re not getting an award from them? Pujols knows that this ludicrous piece of legislation could change his life, possibly as soon as the next west coast road trip. I’ve met Albert and know that he is one of the most honorable men in baseball if not all of sports. My guess is he didn’t understand the context of this rally and was pulled in by LaRussa. After hearing from his Hispanic fan base, my guess is he passes on the next offer from Beck.”
