Asked by Fred Thompson (who knows something about being misled into believing that you’re a viable presidential candidate) whether he might run, Lou Dobbs replied:

“Yes, is the answer. I’m gonna be talking some more with some folks who want me to listen to them in the next few weeks.”

Dobbs Hangs With Cheech And Chong In O’Reilly Green Room

Before his interview, Dobbs seemed very much at ease in the green room, drinking Diet Coke, applying ChapStick, and laughing hysterically as O’Reilly pre-taped an interview with Cheech and Chong (set to air later this week on “The O’Reilly Factor”). Dobbs even laughed when Cheech and Chong came into the green room after their interview to wish him luck, and Chong joked that he looked forward to seeing him in his new show on Fox News.

Although Lou Dobbs has been saying that his departure from CNN was an “amicable parting on the best of terms,” the New York Post reports that CNN wanted him gone so badly that it gave him an $8 million severance package. Dobbs “had a year and a half to go on his $12 million contract.

CNN paid Lou Dobbs $8 million to quit.

Dobbs will be appearing on Fox News tonight to talk with Bill O’Reilly, who has called the former CNN host a “stand-up guy.”

Lou embraced that, but he came to me a few weeks ago and said he’d decided it wasn’t for him,
The talks were very friendly, constructive, sane and adult.

I absolutely love how Mr. Klein felt the need to point out the conversation with the Wack Job Dobbs was, “sane and adult”.

So, what really happened to Lou Dobbs?

According to The New York Times: “Months ago the president of CNN/U.S., Jonathan Klein, offered a choice to Lou Dobbs … [he] could vent his opinions on radio and anchor an objective newscast on television, or he could leave CNN.” This after months of intense pressure from those concerned with the content broadcast nightly on Dobbs’ CNN program — leading some in the press to describe the host as a “publicity nightmare” for the network. It is in that environment, that Dobbs announced last night his immediate departure from CNN, his cable news home for nearly 30 years.

Media Matters released the following statement responding to the late breaking news:

For too long, CNN provided Lou Dobbs with its stamp of approval as he pursued a dangerous, one-sided and all too often false conspiracy tinged crusade against immigrants,” said Eric Burns, president of Media Matters. “This is a happy day for all those who care about this nation of immigrants and believe in the power of media to elevate the political discourse.”

Of course I have. Sure. Without question. They are coordinating with a number of groups, including the Center for American Progress. The usual suspects. To carry out constant and absolutely insidious and sordid attacks on me. And the reason they’re doing so, I’m the leading independent voice, and I am critical on their policies and intent, on unconditional amnesty, and leaving the borders and ports unsecure. They cannot, they’re…

Lou Dobbs told GQ that the White House had been conspiring with a number of groups, including ThinkProgress, to wage “insidious and sordid attacks” against him with the goal of intimidating him and his former network.

Dobbs for President?

Parsing the Lou Dobbs bombshell, I can’t help wondering if the pudgy populist is planning a run for president in 2012. My guess: yes. And if he does, I’ll bet he’ll do so as a Peron-style, would-be Ross Perot. It could be America’s first truly fascist electoral effort.

Okay, I know I’m jumping the gun. Maybe his quitting is just so he can move over to Fox, though that would probably push Geraldo Rivera out. -
