Who Really Owns The NYPD?
It’s called the Paid Detail Unit and it allows the New York Stock Exchange and Wall Street corporations, including those repeatedly charged with crimes, to order up a flank of New York’s finest with the ease of dialing the deli for a pastrami on rye.
The corporations pay an average of $37 an hour (no medical, no pension benefit, no overtime pay) for a member of the NYPD, with gun, handcuffs and the ability to arrest. The officer is indemnified by the taxpayer, not the corporation.
New York City gets a 10 percent administrative fee on top of the $37 per hour paid to the police. The City’s 2011 budget called for $1,184,000 in Paid Detail fees, meaning private corporations were paying wages of $11.8 million to police participating in the Paid Detail Unit. The program has more than doubled in revenue to the city since 2002.
The taxpayer has paid for the training of the rent-a-cop, his uniform and gun, and will pick up the legal tab for lawsuits stemming from the police personnel following illegal instructions from its corporate master. Lawsuits have already sprung up from the program.
Holy shit. That’s disturbing.

Feds: Zawahiri Launched Al Qaeda Terror Plot for 9/11 Anniversary
U.S. authorities are scrambling to sort through information that the CIA developed in the past 24 hours indicating that at least three individuals entered the U.S. in August by air with the intent to launch a vehicle-borne attack against Washington, D.C. or New York around the anniversary of 9/11, according to intelligence officials.
Officials say the alleged terror plot was initiated by new al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden’s successor, who had pledged to avenge bin Laden’s death earlier this year in a U.S. raid.
Intelligence and law enforcement officials told ABC News that at least one of the individuals is a U.S. citizen and one official said that two of the individuals may have had U.S. documentation — whether green cards or passports was unclear.
I believe it’s important to be aware, but it’s also important to remember the most powerful weapon terrorists possess is terror. Fear and panic are the desired outcomes of terrorism - besides the attacks themselves. Remember, the threat is specific, but it is also unconfirmed.
NO! I MISS MANHATTAN! I MISS BROOKLYN! I WANNA GO HOME! AND RIDE THESE TRAINS!
The HBO show “Boardwalk Empire” is really going old school. Vintage trains reminiscent of the 1920s will be running in New York City throughout the month of September to kick off the new season of the hit show. “Starting on Saturday, September 3rd an authentic vintage 1920’s train will run on the express 2/3 track in Manhattan throughout September (specifically, from 12 to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays).” So if you are in the area, don’t miss this opportunity to be transported back in time.

I’ve noticed a lot of positivity on Twitter and Tumblr the past day. Yes, the media is on a current loop (in NYC, CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, WB, UPN, CNN, MSNBC and Fox News have been reporting the same thing since this morning. Just subbing people in). But I’ve seen a lot of “be safe”, “stay safe” tweets and posts - as well as this video of NYers helping NY in a very real, yet symbolic way. I don’t remember this kind of positivity here since the blackout in ‘03. I wondered then, as I do now, if that was a result of the days after 9/11 when we were numb, but for the first time in two generations, we understood we’re all in this together and needed to help each other out. Of course, that feeling dissipated - unlike World War II. Though, I’d bet all the money I have (and it’s not much) that come clean-up time, you’ll see all sorts of New Yorkers helping other New Yorkers, whether they know them or not.
The construction of One World Trade Center is hardly mentioned in the media, yet here it is: The first post-September 11 tower stands 76 stories high at the moment and will be at 104 floors high by the time it is finished. [August 2, 2011/AP Photo]
I watch it rise every day… and was just wondering today how high it was currently.
